Today, President Barrack Obama mentions that the economic crisis in the USA will be end this year and next year it will be better. In Thailand, many exporter companies still lay off their employees or at least cut off their employees’ overtimes. Many people said that about one million people will become unemployed during the crisis. In the meeting of G 20 countries last week, there are different views points for solution between USA and EU countries. USA stills going to use government budget to help solve Finance Coperations’ bankrup. While EU countries want the Financial institutions to learn from their own mistakes. Thailand is also face with this crisis as well. However, we can see this crisis from positive point of views. This crisis may bring us, Thai people move into the new era of development.
If we consider everything in this world, they are all in changing situation. World society as well as Thai society is also in this changing process. The changes covered all aspects in economy, polity, society and environment. These changes sometimes happening slowly, but in some certain times they happened even faster. Particularly this period of time the changing is very fast, widely and deeply. We can say in another word that it changed in landscaping of our society. There are many great thinkers explained these changes in different ways. The two gurus of Marxism, Carl Marx and Frederic Angel mentioned that human society started from Primitive Society then moved to Feudal Society then Capitalist, Socialist and Finally Communist Society at the end. Marx and Angel believed that in changing are quantity changes and quality changes. In quality changes society needs revolution with violent process. The changes must be done by the disadvantages people in the society. Next management guru, Peter F. Drucker, said that at present most society in this world are moving from capitalist society into knowledge based society. He mentioned that in the new society make the used knowledge, practice, concept and method that we currently used out of date. Human being need to improve and to innovate new knowledge, new practice, new concept and new method for this new society. Changing in Drucker’s view has to be revolution but it is not need violence struggle. He suggested that the management revolution for this changing process. The other great thinker and writer, Alvin Toffler, also said that our world started from Agricultural wave and move to second wave of industrial wave. Now it will move again to the third wave of information age. The last guru that I want to present here is Stephen R. Covey, a leadership development guru. He classified economy into five eras, from the hunter era, to agricultural development era, and then industrial era and finally to information era and next will be knowledge based era.
At this step we can conclude that our society is changing to become a society that a move of knowledge from one field of occupation to other fields of occupation is easier than before. There will be no limit in term of a different type of job, no limit in time and place any more. Learning network need to be built. People network and organizational network need to be built at the wider level as must as we can do as well. These could be done through an information technology that is no limit. These changes will bring the move of power and influence in our society and our world. These moves are affected to all countries, all geography and all groups of people as much more than ever happened in the old ages of development.
In order to coup with this new situation, we need to answer all questions that come with the coming changes as mentioned. Leadership roles, organization management need to be revised in government agencies, in businesses, in societies as well as in people associations. The needs for these organizations, associations and societies whether they can develop visionary, missions, plan and operation that fit and response to the problems they faced or not. Moreover, organizations, associations, and societies also must manage these changes to make valuable used of resources for highest benefits and sustainability for development of human being in this globe. This understanding is very important not only for leader for current society but also the leader of future society as well.
Most important thing for Thai people to survive and over come this crisis is “Sufficiency Economy”. “Sufficiency Economy” is quite a unique philosophy for us to coup with the changes, which is mentioned above. “Sufficiency Economy” is a philosophy bestowed by His Majesty the King to his subjects through royal remarks on many occasions over the past three decades. The philosophy points the way for recovery that will lead to a more resilient and sustainable economy, better able to meet the challenges arising from globalization and other changes.
“Sufficiency Economy” is a philosophy that stresses the principles of the middle path, balancing acts and moderation that people can apply to use in their days to days life. “Sufficiency Economy” also discussing a protection of oneself against inevitable shocks and problems that arise. To achieve this philosophy, the application of knowledge with prudence is essential. At the same time, it is essential to strengthen the moral practice of the nation, as well. In order to make this philosophy happened in people days to day’s life a new theory is also applied to conduct at the level of the individual, families, and communities.
In Thailand many people have tried this philosophy and theory. Many walks of life try and have their own successful practices, particularly since the last economic crisis in 1997. They find solutions for their occupations and their lives. That is the reason while I write this article to share with any people who are interested to learn from Thai experiences.
